Morocco: Eat for the temperature you want to be
They say “Dress for the job you want”. Well it’s been 33 – 38 degrees since we arrived in Morocco so I’ve adopted a new approach (see title of this post). As a result I’ve had a lot of iced beverages (this is not so new for me), but also had Gazpacho for dinner, that was a first, and it was delicious! Also yogurt. Any hot meal with a yogurt-based sauce is both instantly cooler, and immediately delicious. I definitely need to find and make more such things!
Related to the temperature and trying not to sweat out of new places on my body, there’s been a lot of “shade walking”. Whether it’s a group of road signs casting a shadow, or a small bush, no shade is too pathetic to go out of my way to seek its alluring casted darkness. If someone (Miranda) tries to stop (to confirm directions or get something out of the bag) the phrase “Shade! *pause* Shade!” is spoken aloud (inspired by the “Shame! chant from Game of Thrones).
When we’re not having fun frolicking in the shade (super fun, I know right!?!) we’ve been eating random things from stalls – while closing our eyes to the filthy hands used to serve us – avoiding snakes and the charmer musac that attracts them, and trying to stay ON the beaten path. Taking a wrong turn often requires the urgent need for mint and the stuff-of-nightmare chicken screams that I’d like to forget, but can’t.
That being said, the beaten path has lead to some hidden gems, which we’ve enjoyed. Getting a private tour of Yahya’s Creations to ideate on murals for our super yacht was a nice surprise today! Beginning to price out a new bellows was another – who knew that Berber creations included Camel leather, at least I think that’s what it was!
As expected, I’ve been living off of Berber Whiskey, mint tea. It’s so tasty, staves off cancer, and has half the caffeine of coffee. I don’t know why I haven’t been drinking it at home more, but I intend to! Also, it’s made from a cool sounding ingredient- gun powder tea (really it’s just rolled up mint leaves but still). Also it’s fun to see how high you can pour from without spilling.
That’s it for now. Thanks for reading! Choukran!
