Honeymoon

Chendul, a drink by any other name is not as sweet

I’m not sure that you are aware, but in Asia you can get a cool drink of almost anything..

Barley? Sure! Nutmeg? You know it! Citronella? Coming right up! It’s actually quite amazing (and disgusting in some cases).

I’ve actually taken quite joy in trying every drink I can to see which ones I love the most that also gross out Miranda.

I present to you, the champ…

Cendol.. Or Chendul.

It’s part brown syrup (sweet sweet sugar syrup), part condensed milk (or coconut milk – yuck!), part red beans (and brownish paste that I believe to also be red bean based), part jellowy green worms, and finally, shaved ice (that Miranda insists should be prepared with the Snoopy Sno Cone Maker).

Oh and here’s the best part… It comes in bowl form as well…

Miranda claims it looks (and tastes) like vomit. She also likes to mock me in my quest for a Chendul a day, which leads to things like this…

Yes, that’s a delicious little green worm from my Chendul up her nose. For shame.

In this pursuit I have also tried, and enjoyed the following:

Watermelon juice (so good!)

Citronella juice, which is surprisingly good!

Iced coffee with condensed milk (an instant favorite and go to)

Iced barley (with lime). This is odd and delicious.. And chewy.

Amazingly delicous chocolate peanut butter drink with a transformer emblem.. It transformed my thirst into being quenched, and Miranda’s eyes into rolling (at me).

And let’s not forget my previously mentioned favorites..

1) Sugarcane Juice (elixir from the heavens)

And 2) This indescribable beauty (from Black Canyon – otherwise known as the best coffee company ever)

Some horrible beverages that will never be consumed again include..

Anything with sour plum, like this:

– Ice Kacang

Like a Cendol.. But then all these awful things added that ruin everything. Do not want. Never eat / drink this. Ever. You’ve been warned.

Also, anything else that Miranda drinks. She says not to yuck her yum, but I say YUCK! đŸ™‚

In the words of Mark Twain, of all the things I’ll have lost upon my return home, it’s my quenched thirst I’ll miss the most.

That is all.
